Swanky Summer Accessorizing

The Art Deco style flourished across the decades spanning the end of WWI to the end of WWII. You can find this eclectic style with its bold geometric elements that echo scenes from the Machine Age of the early 20th century in architecture, art and consumer goods. Our favorite aspect, of course, is the inspiration Art Deco gives to today’s jewelry styles.

The Art Deco style often summons up images of exuberant parties straight out of a Fitzgerald novel, but that doesn’t mean you need to wear Deco baubles strictly at Roaring Twenties parties. Instead, let the style enjoy some time in the sun this summer.

Art Deco 1

This layered Deco style necklace is positively copacetic!

The layered look is in, so why not embrace it while letting your inner flapper girl shine? This necklace’s coppery finish combines perfectly with peach crystals, resin fans and a geometric design that’s astonishingly striking. We love that it’s so versatile, and can easily transform from edgy to boho with a simple change of costume.

Art Deco 3

This nifty mint necklace is the cat’s pajamas!

Mint is a classic summertime color, and what’s not to love? Such a fresh pastel shade is perfect for shaking off the winter blues. This statement necklace’s exquisite fanning design and minty color scheme makes it the optimal choice for enlivening summer couture with chic Art Deco appeal.

Art Deco 2

These ritzy dangle earrings glam up any outfit!

Whatever you do, don’t forget the earrings! The architectural Deco look of these gold-tone dangle earrings lends a touch of luxuriance to any ensemble. Need something a bit more formal for weddings or summer soirees? We have daring drop earrings to coordinate with nearly any extra fancy frock.

All in all, we’re stoked to celebrate the swanky style of modern Art Deco fashion all summer long. However, that’s not to say we aren’t also in love with the Deco jewelry of yesteryear. In fact, we’re thrilled to offer an exciting lineup of pieces that are either true Deco or heavily inspired by the movement in our vintage catalog. So whether you’re going full flapper for your next party or simply inspired to bring throwback glamour into your wardrobe, we’ve got the jewelry to make this season the Summer of Deco!

DIY Watercolor Manicure

It’s always fantastic to add fabulous flash to your wrists and digits with gorgeous bracelets and rings, but if you want to further customize your look, manis are the way to go! Here at HeirloomFinds.com, we’ve been perusing runway nail art trends and have discovered that watercolor nails are in for spring. We seized the opportunity to visit our local beauty supply store and gather the tools necessary to craft such a unique look.

Audrey 3 2

Spring marks the perfect occasion for rocking sweet watercolor manis.

Although the artistic nature of watercolor manis allows you to choose whatever palette you like, we decided that a mélange of springtime pastels would be the perfect selection for celebrating the return of warm weather.

What You Need

Gather the supplies you need to get this great manicure!

What You’ll Need:

  • Clear base coat
  • Clear top coat
  • One base color. We chose “Paper Mâche” by Finger Paints.
  • Three or more nail polishes. After some deliberation, we decided on “Can’t Find My Czechbook,” “Hawaiian Orchid” and “Do You Lilac It?” by OPI.
  • Pure acetone
  • Small mixing cups
  • One pipette
  • One or more small nail art brushes
  • One small cleanup brush
Base Coat of White

We chose a white nail polish as the backdrop for our pastel manis.

Step One: Apply your base coat and let dry. Then apply one to two coats of your chosen base color.

Mixing Your Colors

Combining a drop of polish with pure acetone dilutes the color for a great watercolor effect.

Step Two: Use the pipette to place four drops of pure acetone into a small mixing cup, then add one large drop of your first nail polish color. Stir until the mixture is well combined. Repeat for your remaining nail polish colors.

Third Color

Start dabbing on nail polish. You’re the artist!

Step Three: After making sure your base color is dry, begin using a small nail art brush to dab splotches of color onto your nails. Since you’re the watercolor artist here, you may be as random or careful as you like. We decided we wanted our colors to have a mottled overlapping effect. Continue until your nails are completed to your liking. Also, you have the option of diffusing the painted splotches by gently going over them with pure acetone.

Touchups

Touch up your newly painted nails to get that professional look.

Step Four: Remove any excess polish around your nails using the small cleanup brush and pure acetone. Once everything’s dry, apply the clear top coat.

Butterfly

Look at those pretty pastel nails and gorgeous accessories!

Voilà! You have a watercolor manicure that’s perfectly on-trend for spring and totally one of a kind! Now all you need is to do is layer on some ring stacks and bangles before going out to enjoy the sunshine. Have fun showing off your fresh springtime look!

Marsala: 2015′s Color of the Year

Header Image

The official color for 2015 is absolutely stunning!

If you’re a fan of rich and versatile neutral colors, this is your year. The Pantone Color Institute, the prominent leader in color insights and trend forecasting, has declared that Marsala is the color of the year for 2015. A warm and soulful shade of earthy terracotta, Marsala has exciting potential for adding an attractive pop to makeup, apparel and jewelry. According to Pantone, it effortlessly flatters a range of skin tones and welcomes trendsetters to experiment with their own creativity in flashing this fabulous shade. The color’s burnished blend of red and brown evokes a notable organic feel, but can also imply extraordinary luxury and sophistication when it’s combined with a desirable sheen. From home decor to manicured nails, this subtly sultry color is ready to make a resounding splash in 2015’s design scene.

marsala

Such a complex and beautiful shade!

But what is the meaning behind the name? For most of us, it probably brings to mind the Italian American dish chicken marsala, which is a delicious combination of chicken, mushrooms and a sauce made from a reduction of Marsala wine. It is from this wine that this year’s number one fashion color takes its inspiration. Marsala takes its name from the Italian city near where it was first produced in Sicily. It was originally crafted in the late 1700’s when English merchant John Woodhouse combined a locally produced wine with grape brandy to fortify the beverage for long ocean voyages. Marsala enjoyed a lengthy period of popularity with the British navy before eventually becoming more widely accepted as a cooking wine. However, it has regained favor with oenophiles in recent years. The color it has inspired is, as we know, nothing short of spectacular.

History lesson aside, how do you plan to rock this luxe hue? It pairs incredibly well with pink and lavender tones, giving you a chance to sport some feminine flair with a chic Marsala dress or covetable coat. Statement rings, dazzling dangle earrings, flirty bracelets and striking necklaces in these soft, pretty shades are surefire options for amping up the glam of your next cutting-edge Marsala ensemble.

Pink Ring

This pale purple dyed agate ring will add dynamic flash to your Marsala ensemble

Don’t forget the sparkle! These pink aurora borealis drop earrings pair perfectly well with the wine-colored hue.

Add a feminine touch to your cutting-edge look with this glistening pink crystal bracelet.

Going for something a little more unique? Try out this glam beaded pink scarf necklace.

Granted, not every lady is in love with the color pink. Never fear! If you prefer combining colors that are artfully vibrant without becoming too clashing, cobalt blue hues are the way to go for creating a truly memorable and modern look. Your jewelry collection will thank you for adding such attractive blue baubles to your Marsala style lineup.

Marsala and Cobalt

One thing that makes Marsala so spectacular is that way it makes accessories gorgeously pop.

Sport fantastic glam with these incredible cobalt blue crystal burst earrings.

This cobalt blue stretch ring will add dazzling pop to any Marsala outfit.

This bracelet’s unbelievable blue hue will pair wonderfully well with Marsala’s warm earthy tones.

Based on Pantone’s top color pick for 2015, we think it’s safe to say that this year should be nothing short of outstanding on the fashion front. Who could have guessed that a wine historically valued by sailors and chefs could inspire such a gorgeous hue? However you decide to sport Marsala and whatever glamorous jewelry you choose to wear with it, we hope you enjoy this stunning color of the year as much as we do!

Nikki Butler Design

Graphic Designer and Artist Nikki Butler of Nikki Butler Design

We can’t think of anyone who pulls off a put-together look with as much ease as Nikki Butler. Nikki created the Heirloom Finds logo, and she designs those banners you see on our website. She’s warm and generous and has a sly sense of humor; that she’s effortlessly glamorous is just the icing on the cake.

Our Pearl and Gold Initial Charm Bracelet glows against the pink of Nikki Butler Design’s Clutch

A self-described “graphic designer who loves to sew,” Nikki runs Nikki Butler Design, where she makes clutch handbags and scarves using luxurious fabrics in her own custom prints. We thought it would be fun to turn Nikki’s intuitive style sense loose, so we asked her to match her favorite Heirloom Finds jewelry with selections from her own wardrobe. As she modeled her looks for us, we chatted about fashion inspiration.

Heirloom Finds It's Such a Tassel Necklace Earrings

Wearing Caught in Cross Hairs Bracelet and It’s Such a Tassel Necklace and Earrings

What kind of jewelry do you find yourself drawn to? Why?
I’m a pearl girl for certain because of their classic, timeless elegance. I also love sparkly! And colorful statement pieces always capture my attention—if you’re going to wear jewelry, let it be seen! Chunky bangle bracelets, cocktail rings and bib necklaces are excellent conversation starters. Jewelry in general makes me feel more feminine.

How would you describe your personal style?
I actually have narrowed it to three words: Classic, Feminine & Colorful. It’s become my mantra when shopping!

Do you have a favorite style icon?
I can’t narrow it to just one. I’d love to spend a day in Kate Middleton’s closet and I’m forever drawn to Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ timeless style.

You look great every time I see you, and it’s almost like that informs your calm, collected demeanor. Do you feel less like yourself when you have to rush out the door in any old thing you threw on?
Well, thank you! I feel most confident and myself when my hair is curled, I’m in full make-up regalia and wearing something feminine. Sometimes I wear sparkly earrings to the gym just to feel more like me.

Sometimes you go for an edgy look; sometimes, a traditional one. Do you think there are different aspects of yourself that become more apparent depending on your outfit for the day?
This is the reason that I have never been one to lay out my outfits the night before. Sometimes I even feel like I have a split-fashion personality! My closet is very diverse. One day it’s a floral skirt and heels, the next day it’s ripped jeans and flip flops. Watch out when I’m wearing my black leather pants!
